Get Clean this 2015! DETOX MEAL PLAN

A lot of us are motivated at the beginning of the year to make some big changes in our lives.  Some of our vow every year to “get healthy” or “read more” or “remember people’s names”.  While planning to be better and get healthier is great in theory, unless you have specific actions/steps you will take to follow through on these plans, chances are you’ll soon return to your usual life, resolutions abandoned, only to make the same empty promises 365 days later.

So this year, if you are TRULY motivated to take action for your health, contact me about my Wellness Programs which are simple and effective. (wellandbalanced@gmail.com)

RECIPE: Fixer Elixir

Tis the season for tree timing and gift giving, ’tis also the season for getting….coughs and head colds, that is…

Especially if you are dashing about, decorating the halls, and generally over-extending yourself, you may find yourself a little run down.

The moment you feel that fullness in the back of your throat or the congestion in your nose, concoct this creation to stop that cold before it grows fur and antlers!

Fixer Elixir 2In a blender combine the following ingredients:

1 cup filtered water

1 cup organic spinach

1/2 cup ice

The juice and pulp of 1/2 lemon (seed are fine too)

1/2 inch x 1/2 inch cube go ginger

1 dash (1/8 tsp) cayenne pepper

1 Tbsp of honey (preferably raw)

Mix together, guzzle and let the healing begin!

RANT: Fake Food and Sneaky Ingredients

OK, it’s been a long time since I Ranted.

But This really ticks me off.  When companies sell a “food”, for example sunflower seeds, the consumer should expect that they are in fact buying…..SUNFLOWER SEEDS.  Not some chemicalized version of a sunflower seed.  Just like if you buy Mayonnaise, it shouldn’t have EDTA in it, same with Triscuits, or anything else out there.

I used to pick an item up and look at its fat content.  If it was high I was supposed to avoid it.

Then I was taught to look at the carbohydrate count. If there were too many carbs or sugars, I was taught it would make me fat.

I now know, what really matters, in fact the ONLY thing that matters when you buy a food, is that you look at THE INGREDIENT LIST!

It’s what’s IN the food that matters!

Additives, fillers, preservatives, flavor enhancers are added to almost everything!  And they are known to cause obesity, diabetes, behavioral problems, and cancer.

So what are our stores filled with them?

See the two examples below:

The Trades Joes Sunflower seeds’ ingredients: Sunflower Seeds, Sunflower oil, and Salt (All reasonable)

The Harris Teeter Sunflower seeds’ ingredients: Sunflower Seeds, Salt, CONRNSTARCH, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS , HYDROLIZED SOY PROTEIN (????)

Are these added ingredients necessary?

sunflower seedsThe above example isn’t even near the worst.  There are sauces with known carcinogens and crackers with cancer causing agents sprayed in the bag to keep them “fresh”.  How Fresh is Cancer!?!

So please people, LOOK AT THE INGREDIENTS! Know what you are eating! If you don’t recognize it, can’t pronounce it, or it has numbers or all caps letters in the ingredient list (BHT, EDTA, Yellow 5, etc) Don’t Eat it!

Pledge to yourself, your health and your family’s health, to EAT ONLY REAL FOOD!

RANT: why simplify?

I consider myself a fluctuator.  You know, a sorta healthy weight until the proverbial “___ hits the fan”, life gets stressful, then it starts ….

I’m not sleeping enough, I’m eating junky foods, and lots of it, then BAM! I swell up like 2 sizes….until stuff cools down and I’m able to get back to my routine of healthy living.

But then again, isn’t that’s what’s happening to all of us?

lower_your_stress_level

When you are stressed, you are not as good to your body.  You eat too much, and it’s usually too much of the bad stuff (did somebody say mozzarella sticks?!).   When you are stressed your sleep suffers, you don’t get enough water, nutrients, exercise, or time for play.  When you are strapped for time, you eat convenient foods, not good-for-you foods.  When we are frazzled, we’re not as nice to our loved ones, which causes them stress (and worsens our own).  When you body is stressed (you tired of me using that word yet, is it causing you stress?) it holds on to every calorie it can and packs on the fat tissue because it’s preparing for the worst (long winter without food? drought? famine?) Then shedding pounds becomes nearly  impossible!

I really think, as a nation, we aren’t all over-weight, we’re just all crazy-stressed!

Slammed with work, financial woes, kids’ schedules, social obligations, unrewarding jobs, unhealthy or broken relationships, facades to keep up, our own self-imposed stressors, taking on too much, ailing parents, car trouble, the list goes on…

stresssymptoms

So if stress makes you fat and unhealthy, then wouldn’t it make sense that de-stressing and simplifying your life would make you more healthy, trimmer and overall much happier?

What are ways you can simplify!?

RANT: Will Power

I can make myself get up t0 go to work.

I brush my teeth daily (so I don’t get cavities or a jacked up grill) and wash my face twice a day (so I don’t get acne)

I can make myself exercise, even when I don’t want to.

So why is it so hard to NOT eat something that’s bad for me?

will power

I overheard a nurse at work say “I just don’t have that kind of will power”

I have felt the exact same way when it comes to food. But now that I know WHY I can’t stop eating, I feel a little more in control.

If you’re like me, the more sugar I eat, the more I want.  But if you eat things sweetened with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) or Aspartame, you are likely to eat WAY more of it than you should. Both aspartame (think Diet Coke) and HFCS have actually been linked to causing obesity and decreasing your body’s own appetite suppression (You know that signal that says “stop! you’re full”) And they are in EVERYTHING! (yogurt, bread, flavored coffee, everything!)

It’s hard to find foods on the grocery store shelves that don’t have some kind of sugar, corn syrup, sucrose, dextrose, cane syrup, rice syrup, etc in them.  We are a sugar and salt addicted society.  It’s not your Will Power that’s to blame.  It’s the addictive nature of the foods around us.  So BREAK THE HABIT! Allow yourself to enjoy filling flavorful foods, but avoid foods with these addictive gut busting ingredients!  You’ll feel more empowered!
